A unique set of tools and programme that enables primary school children to bridge their learning gaps through self and peer learning, operationalised in partnership with States (in India) to enable scale.

The Kadam Step Up Programme enables children that have missed out on school or are far behind in their learning outcomes, to bridge their learning gaps. The programme also builds confidence and skills in children to keep on learning, and therefore succeed in their regular grade appropriate classes after being mainstreamed. Overall the programme breaks the cycle of poverty by enabling first generation learners get access to and succeed in school education.
The Innovation
There are an estimated 6 million Out of School Children in India , and many more drop out during the primary grades, because of the inability to follow the teaching in their age appropriate grades. The Government of India’s “Education for All Mission ” has despite its mandate been unable to cater to the needs of these children, partially because India is experiencing the largest rural to urban migration in history.
There is a need of effective tools for the children to close their learning gap combined with activities in a safe and inclusive environment that builds confidence, social skills and the capacity to learn in Out of School Children. The tools and the learning system has to address every child’s individual needs so the child can learn on his or her actual learning level.

About Humana People to People India
Humana People to People India’s (HPPI) mission is to unite with people in India in order to create development in the broadest sense through the implementation of the projects that aim at transferring knowledge, skills and capacity to individuals and communities who need assistance to come out of poverty and other dehumanizing conditions.
*Humana People to People India is an MLC Pioneer Member. The MLC Pioneer cohort aimed to highlight innovations that have scaled to meet the needs of a significant proportion (i.e. 40%+) of their target populations. This cohort was included in the 2019 and 2020 application rounds, however it was phased out in 2021.
