Zipline’s Medical Drone Delivery Service addresses the lack of universal access to healthcare products. Their autonomous drones provide instant access to vital medical supplies precisely where and when they are needed, irrespective of weather, terrain, traffic conditions and time.
Zipline’s on-demand health logistics are strengthening national health systems' ability to respond to emergencies and provide universal access to healthcare. This leads to reduced stock-outs and large savings in product waste and expiries, as well as reduced referrals and better quality of care. Their service is enabling improved health outcomes such as reduced maternal and infant mortality, reduced avoidable deaths from emergencies such as trauma or snakebites, increased vaccination rates and increased adherence to treatments.
The Innovation
Zipline designs, builds and operates autonomous drones that fly at up to 110km/h to safely deliver packages, by parachute, at their destination. Additionally, Zipline stocks medical supplies and operate their drones from Zipline distribution centres, from which their drones can deliver to health facilities in a 20,100km2 service area.
Zipline’s innovative drone delivery model, together with government partnership, has the potential to strengthen public supply chains and save lives. Zipline’s model allows healthcare workers at facilities to order medical products, vaccines, and blood from Zipline, via text/WhatsApp, phone, or the web. Zipline receives the order and delivers the items via drone directly to the health facility. Supply chain interventions have been found to lead to positive impacts in medical product stocking and medical product stockouts. Through a centralized integrated logistics system including warehousing, inventory management, drone delivery and realtime data management, Zipline’s model is meant to result in a faster, more convenient supply chain system.
