The SunBell is a multifunctional and award-winning solar lantern that provides both light and charging possibilities. Since its launch in 2014, more than 2,6 million SunBell are solving everyday problems for more than 13 million people all over the world.

BRIGHT’s solar products, in particular the SunBell, are tools to cover basic human needs and have the potential to improve or even rebuild lives. In 2014, the SunBell was selected as the first solar core relief item for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Since then, the SunBell is solving everyday needs for light and phone charging of over 13 million people in 46 countries. They provide protection, empowerment, equality and dignity for people forced to flee their homes and in need of international aid assistance. A key factor in the classification of SunBell as a core relief item by UNHCR was its ability to create safe environments for women and children. Solar lanterns are known to reduce gender-based violence (GBV) in refugee camps. Furthermore, energy access empowers women to engage in economic activity without having to leave their home and children behind.

The Innovation
The SunBell was designed with the aim of bringing on-grid opportunities to families who have no, or poor, access to electricity, helping the households become more productive, connected, and safer. BRIGHT’s SunBell can provide up to 120 hours of light per charge as well as the possibility for mobile charging. The SunBell is a clean and safe option compared to the standard kerosene lamps many families would normally use for lighting their homes, leading to cleaner and healthier environments.
The product is based on solar technology, replacing kerosene lamps and the need for other fossil fuels. Kerosene lamps are a health and fire risk in refugee settings and need a constant supply of fuel. SunBell works as a personal solar power plant, allowing the user to be self-sufficient with light and charging for up to 4 years. It provides humanitarian aid organizations the possibility to help more people, faster and safer.
