There is a huge lack of access to adequate learning materials in rural and low-income urban areas in the markets we serve (Kenya, Ghana & Ivory Coast). Also, 2 out of 10 East Africans can’t afford private school, sufficient study materials or private tutors. Learners also have to navigate in a high student to teacher ratio environment where access to personalized teacher attention difficult and available only within a very limited timeframe. This has resulted in poor academic performance and a failure to meet basic learning outcomes. According to UNICEF data, only 32% of primary school students qualify to be placed in a secondary school.
Our solution targets learners from low-income families in rural and low-income urban areas. Typically these are learners between 10 years of age and 25 years of age.
We have observed a 22.7% improvement in academic performance over a 9-month period. 70% of our students come from rural areas. Using our platform, students have also received responses to over 2 million Ask-A-Teacher questions asked.
We primarily measure improvement in academic performance. This is measured on the platform and offline when students take exams at their respective schools.
The Innovation
Eneza Education delivers quality and affordable interactive learning to deserving learners in underserved areas via SMS/USSD. Students only need a feature phone (no internet or smartphone required) to access all the content on our learning platform at a very minimal cost of $0.03 per day, $0.15 per week or $0.50 per month.
Eneza has developed a technology platform that allows primary and secondary students, and teachers to access local, relevant, affordable academic courses and study tools by SMS, online and mobile applications. With Eneza, students have the ability to supplement their classroom studies at home by taking lessons ; assessments with individualized feedback on correct and incorrect answers and asking questions to live teachers. Access to learning content is via a USSD code *291# to register, before the student is redirected to an SMS shortcode to navigate through lessons, quizzes & tests from various grades. The students also have access to a text-based Wikipedia search function, a dictionary and our Ask-A-Teacher feature that allows learners to ask questions and receive a response via SMS from one of our responders within 5 to 10 minutes.
The user needs to have a mobile device, any mobile device, that is connected to a mobile network. The user will dial our shortcode to subscribe and begin taking lessons at a subscription fee. The messaging is unlimited once the fee is paid. The user can select their class level, select any subject of choice and take lessons. In taking lessons, the user gets a tutorial lessons on the topic of choice followed by 5 questions with answer options. Depending on the option selected, the user gets a narrative on why their answers are right or wrong. And if the answer is wrong, they get an explanation into the right answer. As users consume core lessons and assessments, they unlock other features. Users can ask questions to our teachers using our Ask-A-Teacher feature. Users can conduct research work using Wikipedia. This is the same flow for teachers and adults. Users get daily reminders to return to the platform and can also win rewards like airtime credit to motivate parents to share their phones with learners. Leaderboards also offer another fun element and motivation to students.
