Mitra Bukalapak started out as a pilot to digitise mom and pop stores (Mitra) and enable them to compete with major corporations and retail chains. We wanted to bring a positive, sustainable change to micro and small businesses and bring them into the digital economy. Since then, Mitra Bukalapak has expanded to cover multiple supply chains and has helped mom and pop stores offer a vast assortment of products and services.

Mitra Bukalapak empowers over 15 million Mitra to offer financial and digital products to their neighbourhoods, many of whom are underbanked and underserved by traditional finance. Our Mitra report a 3x increase in their average monthly income post joining Mitra Bukalapak, and an increased quality of life for their families and communities. 

This significant increase is attributed to (a) growth in physical goods sales as warung owners are able to source goods at more competitive prices through our platform and (b) the wider variety of products offered, ranging from virtual products to fresh products to logistic services. 

There are over 40 virtual and financial services products that we offer in our platform to help mom and pop store owners increase their small stores (warung) capabilities in order to add their competitiveness to modern retailers. The range of virtual/ financial services products include electricity and phone bills, phone credit, game voucher, insurance, tickets, e-wallets, digital top-up, remittance, and gold investments. 

Mitra Bukalapak continues to innovate with new verticals that can help mom and pop store owners get additional income. One of which is expanding Mitras’ opportunities in logistic services through the BukaSend feature, in which they can  generate new sources of income by being logistic agents. 

Mitra Bukalapak also focuses on helping mom and pop stores to run business more efficiently, by adopting the SaaS services from Mitra Bukalapak. Spanning from bookkeeping to stock/ inventory management, our SaaS services aim to accelerate the adoption of digital tools among mom and pop stores/ small and micro businesses owners, particularly those in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The feedback from Mitra on our SaaS tools was so positive that we created a standalone bookkeeping app called "BukuMitra", which achieved over 500,000 downloads in the first year.

Lastly, Mitra Bukalapak facilitates micro and small business owners with knowledge sharing and capacity building through its flagship ‘Juwara’ Community. This community serves as a pivotal support system that is exceptionally helpful to first-time entrepreneurs through a wide array of training and educational programs, both online and offline.

It gives small business owners the same resources and opportunities as modern retail shops by enabling them to sell various physical foods and virtual products (such as mobile phone top-ups and gaming vouchers), as well as providing basic financial services  (such as bill payment and remittance), which earn them more commission revenue and increases financial and digital inclusion across Indonesia.
